Why do Muslim Celebrate Muharram as New Year?
Majority of Sunni Muslims celebrates Muharram as New Year by the intention that may this Islamic New Year brings them Joy, Happiness, Prosperity, Nourish their livelihood, Strengthen their Imaan (Faith) and also make them a better and sinless Muslim in this New year.
While the Shia- Minority took this month as a month of mourning since the day one as they claimed this month is for mourning for the martyrs of Karbala, where the Ahle bait or the family members of Prophet Muhammad was killed in the battlefield.
The Sunni Muslims also mourn in this month especially on 10th of Muharram also known as 10th Ashura in which many Islamic incidents took place but most importantly the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) PBUH, Imam Hussain (RA) was martyred in Karbala.
The Sunni Muslims offered food to the needy, orphans and the poor , they also offered money to the needy in religion while the major activities they do is Fasting, majority of the Sunni Muslims fast on that day in the remembrance of Imam Hussain and mourn in that way, but the Shia Muslims mourn and remember Imam Hussain in another way which was more often regarded as illegal or Haram according to the scholars of Sunni Muslims.
